Along The Chowan River
The Chowan River is
a blackwater river formed with the merging of
Virginia's Blackwater and Nottoway rivers near
the state line between Virginia and North
Carolina. Flowing for some 50 miles before
ending in the Albemarle Sound on the North
Carolina coast, the river drains over about
4,800 square miles of land in the 2 states.
Flowing through mostly swampland with occasional
high ground, the Chowan River is nearly 2 miles
wide at its opening to the Albemarle Sound. The
Eden House Bridge on US Route 17 marks the
border between the Chowan River and Albemarle
Sound.

The Chowan
River is one of the 3 oldest surviving
English place-names in America. Along
with Roanoke Island and the Neuse River,
it was named in 1584 by Captains Philip
Amadas and Arthur Barlowe, who were sent
to explore the region by Sir Walter
Raleigh. Their "Chowanook" name was
shortened to Chowan.
Historically, the Chowan River also
featured prominently in the Civil War.
As part of a Union plan to eliminate 2
local railroads, Union ships sailed up
the Chowan River and bombarded
Confederate posts at 2 locations. By the
time the ships reached Winton, NC, local
troops had been alerted. Hiding in the
woods near the dock for an ambush, a
Confederate battalion at Winton sent
word down to Union boats saying that the
locals had fled in fear of a Union
attack. |
The ambush
was foiled, however, when a Union
soldier saw the gleam of the sun on
a musket barrel in the woods. The
Union ships quickly pulled anchor,
regrouped, and returned minutes
later to burn Winton to the ground.
Our area is blessed by a relatively
mild climate. The average
temperature in January is around 45
degrees. The average temperature in
July is approximately 79 degrees.
The area’s driest month is usually
November.
Surrounded by one of the most
extensive swamp forests in the
state, the Chowan River supports
black bears, river otters, warblers
and bald eagles, and is host to
numerous water sports plus fishing,
swimming and camping. The beautiful
cypress-lined Chowan River empties
into the western end of Albemarle
Sound, and runs primarily north to
south. There are a few public
beaches along the river’s length,
and summer brings heightened
activity with boating, waterskiing
and jet skiing. Chowan River anglers
catch some 18 different species of
fish: largemouth and striped bass,
white perch, sunfish, catfish, black
crappie and more. The lower Chowan
River is at its most scenic during
the winter months and rarely freezes
over. There is also an abundance of
migratory waterfowl in the winter.
The Chowan River is an excellent
side trip from the Intracoastal
Waterway where it crosses the
Albemarle Sound between the mouth of
the Alligator River and Elizabeth
City.
You’ll have to come and check out
the Chowan River area for yourself.
